Bonjelly
Food Experience Design

To create a new and novel eating experience in the context of a food cart or a stall, taking into consideration the 4 aspects of branding, design, preparation and service.

We kicked off with research into current food trends and designs, shortlisting preparation techniques and eating experiences. Taking on an exploratory approach, we wanted to tap on the wave of social media, choosing the viral food sharing culture, and popularity of Boomerang from Instagram (2015), that captures a burst of images, creating a moving video.
Researching into food that best captures motion, we chose jelly as a material, wanting to enhance the wondrous and exciting nature of the food. Rigorous iterations of prototyping and creation of the actual food/eating experience was done to develop this project.

Bonjelly brings together entertainment and happiness, moving away from the traditional method of consuming jellies - simply placed on plates, or eaten within their molds. Jellies capture a sense of wonder, a child-like nature of unpredictability when it moves or wobbles. We wondered how we could amplify and enhance the eating and wobbling experience of jellies.
Our goal? To enhance the feeling of fun while eating.

We experimented with different shapes and forms, while creating different
holders in which these jellies could be served.

For the design of the food, the recipe was first explored with, using different gelling agents to develop a carefully calculated wobbly-Bonjelly recipe.

We moved to designing and 3D-modelling to discover shapes and forms that could help enhance and highlight the user's experience of wobbling the jellies.

Developing 3 different final designs with each focusing on a type of wobble,
3D-Printing and Vacuum Forming with polyethylene (HDPE) was done to retrieve the negative molds - in order for us to fill and form the jellies.

Each Bonjelly is made to wobble in its own unique way, resting on our special holders,
resembling an updo.

To maximise your wobbling experience, we designed a holder that the jelly sits on. We went through similar iterations to bring together the brand language, jelly forms and handling experience. We discovered the possibility of integrating a suction that holds the jelly in place without it falling off.
Through explorations, we discovered the development of a holder with a suction, able to hold the jelly in place without the fear of it falling while you wobble.
